The Air is Getting Slippery

In Manhattan you can’t throw a rock without breaking a Starbucks window, and with Starbucks comes wireless internet. The coffee stinks, but it’s convenient.

In Boston we sat in a primitive cafe that didn’t offer wireless, though the coffee was better. Had to keep shifting to laptop around the table to catch a whiff of internet from somewhere down the street.

In a motel outside of Sharon, Massachussets, connection was flaky coming through from a used car lot across the street.

In Montreal we tried to sit in a Turkish restaurant that supplied free wifi, but the dishes looked icky and they weren’t open before lunch anyway. We stood in the street, laptop in hand, furtively siphoning bits from the Turks upstairs.

We drove through Erie, Pennsylvania with hardly a stop. Just paused next to a bar & grill, sitting in the truck. Connection kept crapping out on me, but I managed to squeeze my mail through.

It’s all around us. The air is pulsating, crackling. Bits flying about haphazardly. It’s getting denser and denser. Pretty soon it’d be as ubiquitous as cellphone signals, ubiquitous as air. It means you get your mail everywhere. Can talk to people everywhere. It’s coming. It’s here. It’s fun.
