12 Nov 2004I’m looking for a new MP3 player, since I managed to break my old one.
My demands, I feel, aren’t the excessive. 512MB of Flash RAM, can play MP3 and WMA (I don’t really expect OGG support), and a USB2.0 connection. Is that so hard to find?
I’ve searched the auction/group-sale sites. They all have the same products – MP3 players ranging from 128MB to 1GB in storage, but none of them with USB2.0 support.
The online computer stores have a wider range, but almost all of them are ridiculously overpriced – you can find the same devices I saw before, but for sometimes 3 times their price – 1400NIS instead of 500.
Grr.
Any recommendations?

iPod, iPod. Everyone tells me “Why don’t you just get an iPod?”.
I’ll tell you why, then.
Two reasons.
The first is that I’m not really looking for a hardisk-based player. I tend to be rather rough with my electronic belongings, and moving parts tend to take that badly.
The second and more important reason is that I simply dislike – intensely – the standard fixed-width font Apple has been using since the days of Mac Classic, and still lives on in the iPod’s LCD display. Icky, icky, icky. I don’t want to read my track names on that.

I agree with both points. If I had done the shopping I wouldn’t have gotten me an iPod (it was a present). Regardless, I enjoy it 🙂
ps. I tend to be rough to my belongings too, but I needed the extra disk space, so I asked for a 4GB drive. Too bad the flash tech isn’t up to competing on disk space.

Agreed on the space – but for that I have a 30GB 2.5″ drive in an external USB2.0 case that I carry around in my bag. This is mostly for walking around and stuff.
