Statistics!

While grappling with procrastination, I came across these wonderful statistics for the US Presidential elections:

http://edition.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#USP00p1

Some nice figures I got from it:

Vote by Income
                 Obama          McCain   Other/No Answer

Less Than $50,000 (38%)
60%
38%
2%

$50-100,000 (36%)
49%
49%
2%

$100,000 or More (26%)
49%
49%
2%

While Obama had a sizable majority among poorer people, he did not have a majority among the higher incomes. In fact, a different income breakdown shows he had a sizable lead (~6%) in the highest bracket polled, Income>$200,000. This seems to suggest that even though traditionally you could say that the more money you had, the more Republican you tend to be (lower taxes mean more when you have a large income), it seems that this was not a deciding issue in this election.

Falling Down

In a move that surprised everyone, I think, Scarlett Johansson released a tribute album a few months ago, covering Tom Waits songs. This was a while ago, but it took me a while to get over that fact. What was more surprising, considering earlier attempts of actresses-cum-singers, is that it wasn’t bad. This album had two a-priori handicaps, both for being a a pretty actress heading into a new field, and for being a Tom Waits cover album – a feat that is hard to get right as many have shown. It is doubly surprising, then, that she pulled off.

I don’t know if the credit should go entirely to her. Johansson does the vocals, which are certainly adequate, but the real work is done in the arrangement, which are very different than the original arrangements while still capturing the thick, gloomy Waits atmosphere. TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek should get a lot of the credit for the production. It might be selling short her input in the project, but it feels like she’s dragged along inside the arrangements, not a diva but another instrument in the melange. I am not saying this disparagingly – her voice has all the right qualities needed, but it’s certainly not the lead instrument in most of the songs, so attempting to picture her as the center of the production feels a bit hollow.

This must be why I like the music video released for Falling Down, originally from Waits’ Big Time. It was directed by one Bennett Miller, who also cast her in a video for Bob Dylan’s When The Deal Goes Down from his latest album, Modern Times, and the two videos have the same grainy, cinéma vérité quality to them. The one for Falling Down, though, shows Johansson getting prepared for a show – made up, dressed and led to the stage. This has the same qualities I see in the album – her being dragged on by the general production, swallowed up, carried away.

Still, a very good album.

As far as Google Image searches go, this is quite troubling:

Three linguistics notes tonight:

1) I’ve come across a cover version of Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower by one Dionysis Savopoulos, translated to Greek. The title is O Paliatsos Ki O Lisis, which translates as The Joker and the Thief – a fitting title taken from the song itself, but it’s the Greek etymology that interests me. Paliatsos is Joker, and seems to derive from the Italian Pagliaccio, which is a common role in the Commedia Dell’arte. Listi appears at first to be cognate with Hebrew ליסטים (listim), meaning thief, which is a very unusual word in the sense that it sounds like the masculine plural, but is both singular and plural.

2) Google Translate now supports Hebrew, but with the quality I’ve seen, maybe it’s best they skip it. It’s fine for single words or to get the general drift of a section, but useless for anything more. I’ve given it my usual monkey treatment, with predictable results:

Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey –> כולם יש לך מה להסתיר מלבד לי ולאחי קוף”’

3) The English expression “It’s all Greek to me”, signifying something totally incomprehensible, has a French equivalent – “C’est de l’Hebreu’”. It’s all Hebrew to me. This was actually said to my Grandmother in Paris, many years ago, to which she replied: “Yes, yes it is”.

Mediterranean Sunset

4 Oct 2008

I can see why all those authors, poets and painters found themselves in the Greek isles some times. There’s something very peaceful about the Mediterranean. I found myself this week in Matala, a tiny little village in the south of Crete. The place isn’t much more than a handful of houses, hotels and restaurants around a beach and a cliff face, and in the summer is overrun by busloads of tourists, but somehow it still manages to retain a lot of charm. From the stony beach to the Roman grave-caves dug into the rock (overrun, in turn, by hippies in the 60’s), there is a peaceful charm to it.

We avoided the hotels and found a couple of rooms to rent, as is the custom there – a couple have a tiny apartment on the cliff-face, and slowly add another floor, another wing, until they have a 5-room complex connected by metals stairs and bougainvillea. It’s off the main village square, overlooking restaurants, cliffs and the sea, and the view from our veranda combined with the chill September winds at sunset made for a place I can see Hemingway returning to, summer after summer, to sit and write. Start the morning with a dip in the sea followed by several hours at a makeshift desk overlooking the water, then lunch of seafood and retsina, back to some writing, and in the evening sitting in the taverna with German families and British backpackers over wine and olives.

It is not a bad life.
And some of the tavernas have wifi.

Random thought of the day

I wonder about people some times. Someone writes in some message board that he’s off to a trip abroad. Most of the people respond with a variety of “Have fun” or “I’m so jealous” responses. One replies with “No! Don’t go! Come back!”. Is this supposed to be endearing? Is this supposed to be friendly? I can see why someone would think it’s a compliment to want to be around someone, but it seems like such a needy, selfish friendship – “I don’t want you to have fun, I just want you for myself”.

The Greek typefaces are lovely. Symbols familiar from mathematical contexts and college fraternity movies suddenly given life as meaningful words. Deltas and omegas do thetas and mu, and deciphering signs becomes an algebraic equation with infinite variables. One sign results in “Exodus” and the biblical reference strikes before you realize it is nothing, in fact, but an exit.

Bonus tidbit #1: The letters Omega and Omicron, both pronounced pretty much identically these days, were originally a “Large O” and a “Small O” – “O mega” and “O micron”. Never noticed that until my brother pointed it out.

Bonus tidbit #2: The word for street is ODOS, and can be seen on all street signs as ΟΔΟΣ. You can’t help but feel, at first, that it’s a Playstation key combination. Noticed how three of the four playstation keys are Greek letters?
