22 Jul 2006I was planning on writing this entry entirely verse stolen shamelessly from classic poets, but decided I wasn’t quite up to it.
I’m debating what majors to pick for the upcoming school year. My debate is between History and English Literature. I’ve already signed up for History, but then found out the English Lit. department has opened a new American Studies syllabus which sounds interesting, allowing me to pick and choose quite easily between many courses in- and outside the faculty. The downside is that on the whole, I’m not very fond of studying literature at all – it would mean sitting through some classes I probably won’t enjoy very much.
What to do, what to do.

As history showed once and again, it beats the crap out of English l33t.

Whatever you do, think very very carefully before committing yourself to the TAU English dept. It is truly an unpleasant place to study.
The teaching level varies, but the treatment of students is almost uniformly bad, with the occasional slip into atrocious. There are a few exceptions (such as the delightful Dr. Shamir, who *is* into American lit), but in general, you’d probably be in for a world of ick.
I’d recommend history, even if you want to study American culture and not (just) history. The professors are fantastic, erudite, and the dept is a fun place to be.

Dr. Shamir, assuming it’s the same Milette Shamir I talked to, is indeed the one in charge of this American Studies program. And I have two friends in the English Lit. department that I would enjoy taking classes with.
But both your and Itamar’s warnings are taken under advisement.
