10 Feb 2005The ISnoop GMailomatic Invite-spool allows people to give them their spare invitiations, and allows anyone who wants an account to get an invite through them.
They currently have 1,496,944 invites available.
A million and a half.
I thnk Google’s kinda lost the “Exclusive” angle here. 🙂

Which was the whole point, no? Ride the “exclusive” angle until it’s meaningless, at which point you’ve reached your ulterior goal — mass migration from other ad-supported e-mail providers.

I kinda thought it was supposed to prevent people from using one-time GMail accounts, like some people open one-time hotmail accounts – you give them to someone who wants to send you something but you don’t trust enough to give them your real mail, and then you toss it out. Since GMail accounts don’t expire, that could prove a problem for them.

But Why Prevent?
I can see why mass account creation from a single (evil and porn hosting) source would be a little problematic, but the odd “one-time account” is all gain as far as G are concerned. Exposure, user database, clicks, you name it.

Re: But Why Prevent?
accounts don’t expire. allow people one-time accounts, and soon enough, you’re out of reasonable usernames. Believe it or not, some people would rather find another service provider than having to live with “xmnmyname17584@gmail.com” as their email address.

Wrong
Sorry for the late reply, but I just only noticed your reply.
Another thing I just did is check out the availability of DubiKanengisser@hotmail.com. It’s available. QEDish, no?

Re: Wrong
Hardly a common name, though, isn’t it? Not to mention that usernames like dubi, dubik, dubikan, dubikane, dubi_k, kdubi and various other variations are long gone.

says “173,503 invites available to share”, and “248,813 invites” distributed. That’s a lot, but it’s not a million and a half.

Look at their usage graph – they give out hundrds of thousands a day. A million and a half doesn’t last that long.

And yes, I know that this makes some of their numbers wrong – either the number of invitations given or the number of invitations they had when I checked it.
